New Restaurant-with-rooms, The Dog & Badger

Nestling in the picturesque Chilterns village of Medmenham, The Dog & Badger restaurant and bar is set to open six brand new, super-stylish rooms in June 2016. Set in buildings dating from the 14th Century, the beautifully created new suites paired with a restaurant and Riva bar offer the perfect formula for an indulgent mini break – the ultimate in laid back luxury.

From July, Henry Harris – the man once described as ‘the best French chef with the decency to be British’ – is to take over as Chef-Patron. Harris was the genius behind the highly regarded Knightsbridge restaurant, Racine, where he was Chef/Restauranteur for 13 years until 2015 and where he perfected the art of French provincial cooking.

Eilean Shona opens romantic new bolthole

The private Scottish island of Eilean Shona on the west coast of Scotland – the inspiration for Neverland in JM Barrie’s Peter Pan – has introduced the newly converted Old Schoolhouse. Now a boutique, two-bedroom idyll, it was originally the long-gone island community’s school. It is here, during summer holidays taken on the island in the 1920s, that JM Barrie took inspiration from the magical surroundings to create the screen adaptation of Peter Pan. Following a full year’s restoration, the much-loved derelict outpost on the remote north shore has been transformed into an uber-romantic bolthole for two (or four) by the hotelier and founder of the Marrakech Biennale, Vanessa Branson (sister to Richard) and philanthropist Robert Devereux.

Pura Aventura, champions of Chile’s Carretera Austral, welcomes new BA flights to Santiago

New flights direct from London to Santiago, Chile, announced by British Airways in May 2016, could not have come at a better time for tailor-made Latin America specialist, Pura Aventura who have trail-blazed Chile’s Carretera Austral (or Route 7) and recently introduced their self-drive Carretera Uncovered adventure in Patagonian Chile. British Airways’ new route will be the lengthiest yet, with a flight time of 14 hours 40 minutes using its new Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, running four times a week from 3 January 2017.

Pura Aventura currently offers eight itineraries that fly in or out of Santiago. However it is the Carretera Austral route that reveals some of the last unknown areas of South America – regions that were previously isolated from the outside world and have only relatively recently been united with the mainland, thanks to ambitious construction of the highway. Few tour operators offer trips along this 1,240kms highway linking northern and southern Patagonia, but the rewards of untouched wilderness far away from the tourist trail are well worth the effort.
